Notes
a. Note:   charles nelms lewis, who liked to designate himself as 'farmer' in the census, was a very resourceful entrepreneur, who let the land work for him. but he was much more than just a simple farmer. like his father, after whom he was named, charles jr. was also a multi-faceted entrepreneur, who took up the slack after his father died in an epidemic while away at frankfort in the legislature. he continued developing the road along the little sandy river as his father did, with the slaves performing the labor and manning toll booths, which the state allowed him to run to pay the expenses of the contract. lewis ran cattle drives from bluegrass country to old virginia via catlettsburg. he found a lump of silver while working in the field about 1840; this may have been a cherokee peace pipe, from which he made silverware which is said to remain in the family. charles lewis informally 'managed' carter county's democratic machine and served as carter co. court comissioner, justice of the peace, 1850s; he was elected to state legislature 1879. charles nelms lewis was said to be very mild-mannered, and a populist liberal, though he did support the south and kept slaves.
