Notes
a. Note:   sophie had 6 surviving children (probably at least 7) by henry before the immigration mishap, and one after. the 1900 and 1910 censuses state that she bore 9 children, only 2 of which were alive by 1910. researching a family tradition stating that they immigrated in 1862 when a storm took the youngest children overboard and the ship to canada, we found they were turned away from a ship to nyc in may 1862, instead taking one destined for canada 4 days later. other family researchers cite disease as a factor, and it appears their ship, the gellert, had been quarantined with 42 cases of smallpox the year before. we now believe the youngest children indeed died at sea, of disease, and the 'storm' story came into play as the family attempted to shed their questionable (immigration-wise, anyway) history. having immigrated probably off the records from canada to new york city in 1865, sophie appears as sophia burmester, hairdresser, in the 1869 nyc directory. in the 1870 census, she is listed as sarah (probably to avert complications over immigration status) burmester, hairdresser, with the family and a servant in manhattan. her son louis was a barber, perhaps recieving his training in her nyc shop. a number of photos ca. 1900 show her at family christmas gatherings, presumably in or around queens, nyc. sophie has been identified in the 1900 and 1910 manhattan and bronx censuses as sophie tewis, widow of hermann tewis, her 2nd husband, who d. 1896.
