Notes
a. Note: wendel immigrated from germany nov 1852 on the prince albert. his future wife, lena bender, was on board. it was unclear from the manifests whether they were travelling together, but since their daughter, louisa was born before june 1853, it is likely they knew each other beforehand and were probably from the same area of hesse-darmstadt, germany. wendel's brother joseph immigrated earlier and was probably in new london before they arrived. wendel was listed as a shoemaker in their 1853 marriage record, but by 1859 had a tavern adjacent to his brother's. recently, wendel's certificate of naturalization in windham co. superior court, dated 24 mar 1863, has been indexed in the immigrant project, availible on ancestry.com. in it, he has sworn off any allegiance to any foreign sovereignity whatsoever, particularly 'the grand duke of nassau.' this document led to the discovery of his declaration of intention filed in nyc superior court in nov 1858. wendell and joseph had sons b. the same year, 1860-1, whom they named after each other. about this time, joseph moved to bridgeport and became a tailor. wendell lived out his years in new london, in the tavern. UPDATE: turns out they all did know each other. wendell (as wend kopp), along with lena (benters) and conrad bender, this time all together, appear in arrival manifests from england, arriving in the batavia on 5 sep 1852. unfortunately, no nativity listed. but. . . a month earlier it appears joseph had arrived and was listed as born in offenbach...
