a. Note:   capt. roscoe conkling davis graduated from probably ashland h.s. about 1896. at the onset of the spanish-american war, he entered the naval academy upon the recommendation of a friend in congress, becoming a career navy officer. he volunteered for and participated in a joint effort headed by the marines. he was in convalescence in san francisco during the great quake. later he received command in the engineering arm of the state department. much family knowledge is derived from 'the captain's' charts, notes and letters.
