Notes
a. Note:   What appears below is a verbatim letter written by Charles Krause 12/15/1988: Earlier this year I was able find a listing in the Philadelphia area 1860 Census Index. The info is not perfect, but I came to the conclusion that there are census takers errors. On Pg 539 of the 1860 census film for the 20th ward of Philadelphia, the following is listed: Family #287 Name Age Sex Occupation Birthplace Jacob Huhn 30 M Machinist Germany Augustine 22 F GermanyKate 2 F Pennsylvania The two errors are: ages of Kate and Augusta are reversed and Augusta was born in Washington D.C. I'm not sure if Kate was born in Germany or not. I know they were married in 1857 in Washington D.C. At least the 1860 Census shows that Jacob was born in Germany. The 1870 Census showed a birthplace of "Cossack". I'll accept Germany. One other problem with this info is that it doesn't seem to jive with the birthdate found other places in Chas. Krause's research. Another verbatim info sheet from Chas. Krause appears below. My comments appear in ( ) Karl Jacob Huhn was born January 15, 1833. The country of his birth and of his parents is unknown but believed to be Germany (Or certainly a future German possession, with a name like Huhn). On November 17, 1857 he married Ann Catherine Caroline Bermann. Three children were born of this marriage-Augusta, Henry and Joseph. It is believed that Karl had a tavern in 1862 at 1246 Columbia Ave. in Philadelphia. In a prayer book kept by his wife, it shows that the family moved to Washington D.C. in 1865 and then moved to Chicago on November 6, 1867. In the 1870 Chicago census taken June 11, 1870, the family is listed in Ward 2 as family #206, on page 152 as follows. Name Age Profession Birthplace Huhn, Jacob 36 Keeping Saloon Cassock Kate 33 Keeping House France Augusta 11 At school Illinois Henry 9 At School Illinois Joseph 5 IllinoisMyrer, Mary 19 Servant Germany In the above "Cassock" has been thoroughly researched by myself with help from my Austrian sources, and no such village, town, city or region by that name has been found anywhere in Central Europe. If this is honest information which was just written incorrectly, then my best guess would be the German city of Kassel, which would be somewhat logical given that it is not a great distance from Ann Catherine's birthplace of Frankfurt Am Main.
