Notes
a. Note:   From Chicago Daily News, August 15, 1936 GOLDEN WEDDING PAIR RECALL UNION AVENUE'S EARLY DAYS Union Avenue was as fraught with hazards for heedless youngsters in the '90's (1890's) as it is today, according to Mr. and Mrs. David Millar, residents of the street ever since it was lined with ditches "We had to keep a careful watch over our young children to prevent them from falling off the high board walks," Mrs. Millar said. The pioneer Englewood couple, recently returned from a 2000 mile motor trip to Quebec with their son, David Jr and his wife, will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary by keeping open house for their friends next Sunday afternoon and evening, Aug 23, at their home, 5705 South Union Avenue. The actual date of their fiftieth anniversary-Aug 27-has been reserved for a family fathering in their honor. *Both Born in Scotland* Mr. and Mrs. Millar were born in 1860 and 1864 respectively. Soon after his betrothal in 1885, Mr. Millar came to America to pave the way for the coming of his bride-to-be, who was to arrive the following year. They were married Aug 27 1886, in the Englewood home of Mr. and Mrs. John McKendrick. As part of her remarkably active life, Mrs. Millar takes a great interest in church and social affairs, still retaining a leading place in a Scotch women's club which has met on alternate Wednesdays for more than thirty-five years. Mr. Millar retired from business as a painting and decorating contractor in 1925. His hobbies since then have been checkers and playing his violin. Friends and members of the family frequently call upon him to recite old Scottish poems, of which he has an extensive repertoire. He has also composed some verses since his seventieth year. *Spend Summer in Country.* During most of the summer Mr. and Mrs. Millar reside at their country home on Magician Lake, Dowagiac, Michigan. Until recently Mr. Millar took a very active part in the Englewood Scottish Club and, together with Mrs. Millar is prominent in the activities of the Garfield Boulevard Methodist church, of which he is a trustee. They have seven children, of whom five are living. Robert, died in 1905 and Hugh in 1922, after serving in the world war. The other children all residents of Chicago, are David Millar Jr., 7650 Ridgeland Ave; Mrs Jean Allain, 7341 Michigan Ave; Mrs. Jeannette Kalk, 8526 Aberdeen St.; Mrs Margaret Eastman, 6010 Green Street, and Mrs Elizabeth Menagh 5705 Union Avenue. There are six grandchildren. Funeral Card says died 1/15, not 1/10 which is in other records.
