a. Note:   ness of pneumonia at age of 86 years- funeral Thursday morning. Bernard Schaefer, former Mercer county resident passed away at the home of his son Bernard, at Ellenwood, Kansas Saturday at the advanced age of 86 years, following an attack of pneumonia and infirmities of age. Mr. Schaefer was born in Germany and at age four came with his parents to America, and located at Cincinnati. (NOTE: He came with Mother and step-father, Henry Althoff and half brother, Henry) Shortly after their arrival the parents died of smallpox and the little son was placed in an orphans home in that city.(his half brother was with him..see 1850 census they are under the Althoff name) Later his Uncle Bernard Bourgaman of Maria Stein took the boy and kept him to age 21. ( He also took Henry, the half brother) Attaining his majority he returned to Cincinnati where he was hostler on a ferry boat for three years. Two years after marriage he returned to Maria Stein and made his home on a farm in St.Sebastian where he spent 65 years of his life. Following the death of his wife, which occurred Jan.16, 1928, he went to Ellenwood, Kansas to live with his son. The body will be brought to Roemer's Funeral Parlors at St. Henry Tuesday night and taken to the home of his daughter , Mrs. John wills at St. Sebastian. Funeral will be held Thursday morning at 9 o'clock at At. Sebastian church. Interment at cemetery nearby.
