Note: EL aged 22 yrs, single woman, and two friends. It would appear that they were Jewish and of the Ashkenazim (pronounced ash "ku-na zim) branch. By the end of the 19th century, as a result orf Russian persecution, there was a massive Ashkenazi emigration from Eastern Eurpoe to other areas of Europe, Australia, South Africa and America. It is possible that this is why they left Bavaria. They left London on 23 September 1870 on the ZEALANDIA and arrived at Lyttelton on 23 December 1870. Peter GRIEBEL married Emila BRATZ on 18 December 1873 at the long since gone, St. Pauls Anglican Church, Flaxton, North Canterbury, near Ohoka. This would have been one of the first marriage ceremonies at that Church. Peter and Emila lived in a small wooden house at the corner of Mill Road and Bradley Road, OHOKA. This house is still in existanceyear 2002.;I have a photo. Peter GRIEBEL worked on nearby farms. On the 12 June 1879, Peter GRIEBEL was declared bankrupt. His fortunes must have changed somewhat, because on 12 September 1907 he became a naturalised citizen of NEW ZEALAND. Peter and Emila are both buried in the Kaiapoi Public Cemetery together with one of their sons, George GRIEBEL who was killed in action on 5 April 1918 in his 21 year.
Note: Peter Griebel was a farm labourer from Bavaria. He left Bavaria with his sister, Maria GRIEB
