Note: Johann Nicolaus arrived in America in 1839 living in Old Town, Maryland (now Cumberland County) He moved to Preston county Virginia in 1840 (Now West Va.) All of his children except for Christopher and Anna were born in Germany. He and his brother's went into coal mining in Kingswood District. They were instrumental in building the first Catholic Church in Howesville, Preston County. the church named St. Joseph's is still in use. John Nicolaus was the first person to be buried there and his stone marker towers over many. The Borgman brothers formed the coal mining community of Borgman, West Va. They owned the mines, the homes they rented to the miners and the company store. The town is now a small sightseeing town that gives tours and a historical account of coal mining. His daughter Mary Gertrude married Harmon Borgman, half brother of Nicolaus.
