Notes
a. Note:   The Baptism Records of St. Nicolaus Church, Ankum, Osnabruck Diocese were used as the source for birth and parent information for our Johann Borgman. Johann Henrich Borgman was born in the Kingdom of Hanover during the reign of King George the 3rd of Hanover. The Saxony was divided into three regions The Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Saxony which barely touched the border of Bavaria, an area discussed in the Chapter on the Klebers. The Saxony's covered only one fourth of the Kingdom of Hanover, Prussia. According to land records it can be assumed that the Borgman family was one of wealth owning several estates in the area. Johan was born on the Starten Farm in Lower Saxony. It is still a rather prestigious farm located 2 miles south of Ankum. There is also a farm known as Teutingen and the Borgman family still own the land to this day. They were devout Catholics and the Church is a large part of their history. In 1837 two of Johan's sons departed for America. John Jarrett arrived first at the Port of Richmond, Va. he was then followed by Nicholas in 1839. Harmon arrived in 1839 sometime after Nicholas. Henry, and John arrived in American the next year. There possibly was a sister who also came and settled in Ohio with her husband a man named Fibben. On May 12,1844 Johan purchased the Farm of Westerholte after his sons had left. A copy of this contract is posted on the internet. As was German custom , their father then changed his surname to Landwehr. A portion of the contract reads as follows ______________________________ I herewith sign my name, farmer Heinrich Borgman from Westerholte, and declare herewith that with today's date, the Reverend Mister Landdrost Von Boselager from Eggermuhlen gave me from the funds of the church at Ankum, for my collateral of the Farm of Westerholte, a capital sum of four hundred thaler into my hand. I hereby acknowledge the amount of money that I received as 400 thaler and promise to pay a yearly interest of 3 1/2%, and the balance to be paid in semi-annual payment. Therefore I pledge as security for the amount, interest and other costs my Landwehr Farm of Westerholte, and all my belongings and I permit a document to be drawn up and to enter it into the mortgage register. The undersigned Col. Taggenbrock of Auslage who is my provider, but that I am the sole debtor of the above sum. Thus it happened in Ankum, May 12, 1844 (signed) Heinrich Borgman Col.Lubbert Taggenbrock, provider A notice of death from the church is as follows: Johan Lanvers nee Borgman farmer of Westerholdt 88 years 10 months 24 days old. Cause of death was listed as "old age". Johan married twice having 5 children with his first wife Maria Alheid Hallerman. Johann Nicolaus Borgman our first ancestor in America was the third child of this marriage. He then married Anna Maria Gertrude Griese having 8 children with her. Hermann Heinrich Borgman the fifth child of this marriage was our second ancestor in America. reference FHC #0827559
