Note: WILLIAMSPORT CONSTABLE IS HEART VICTIM ------------------- Wm. H. Sharer Drops Dead This Morning: Taken Ill Last Night _________ Following a attack of acute heart trouble, William h. Sharer, Constable at Williamsport, died about 5:30 this morning. Mr. Sharer was taken ill about 11:30 last night, but rallied sufficiently to allay the anxiety of his family. His body was found shortly after 6 this morning when R.A. Poffenberger, with whom he lived , entered his room. Mr. Sharer had been in apparently good health yesterday, worked as usual and spent the evening in the Williamsport Bank. He had been caused great uneasiness by rumors that the bank had been "spotted" by a band of yeggmen, it is said, and turning every energy toward frustrating any such attempt. He returned home about 11:30 complaining that he was very ill. He has long been subject to heart attacks. Dr. W.F. Richardson was summoned and under his care Mr. Sharer grew better. He was though to be out of danger. He spent the night on a davenport in a room on the first floor of the house. His death was discovered when Mr. Poffenberger came down this morning. Mr. Sharer had been a constable for a number of years. He had served three years of his present term. He was 56 years old. This article is undated: EXTRA POLICE IS APPOINTED AT W'MSPORT " Drunkenness On Increase, Report Shows; Plan for Spring Election At a meeting of the Mayor and the Town council of Williamsport held last night the police force was increased by the appointment of William H. Sharer, a former officer of the town. This action was taken, it is stated owing to the increase in drunkenness in the town. The report last month show that more arrests for drunkenness were made during January than heretofore, the fines******************** violations by Police Justice J. T. Tice amounting to $66. the town officials have given the officers orders to arrest all drunks. According to The Leader, a publication in Williamsport, it shows that W.H. Sharer was the only town police force and that he was paid $48.00 from Feb. 18, 1919 until Feb. 18, 1920. He is listed as a salaried employee of the town of Williamsport. J. T. Tice who was the Police Justice of Peace was paid a salary of $30.00. It was stated that William lived in the home of R. A. Poffenberger, census records have shown that this is Rueben A. Poffenberger son of John and Rachel Poffenberger. John is a brother to Elizabeth Poffenberger / Sharer mother of William. This would make Rueben and William first cousins which explains why William was living there. Rueben Andrew Poffenberger died Dec. 24, 1952. Simon Poffenberger, William's uncle was also constable of Williamsport in the late 1800's to early 1900's. He died at the age of 82 in 1911. It appears that William followed in the paths of his uncle and his wife's uncle J. T. Tice.
