Note: William Lightner was born in Hesse Darmstadt, Germany and came to this country in 1835 with his parents who settled in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. William came to Washington County in 1854 where he lived until his death. He was a hard working and industrious man who worked on the Cumberland Valley Rail Road as it was being built. He was also a member of the Western Maryland Enterprise Fire Company. He was ill for about a year and had suffered a stroke six weeks before his death which left him paralytic and helpless. He died at the home of his son Jacob on West Church Street in Hagerstown. Services were held at the home by Dr. J.S. Kieffer. His interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery on South Potomac Street. He was survived by his brothers Jacob and Peter and a sister Mrs. Nute all of Chambersburg, Pa.
