a. Note:   The Daily Mail newspaper for December 24, 1886, death announcements reads as follows: Died: SHIPLEY,--Saturday evening, December 11, at the Inlet Lock, Dam No. 4, Thomas Shipley aged 66 years. His remains were interred at Bakersville. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. B. F. Cronise. With this information and census reports we can assume he worked on the canal probably as a locktender. It would appear that he may have suffered a heart attack while he was at work. Payroll records from March 1873 - July 1874 of Maryland Lock Keepers show Thomas Shipley, Antietam Division ,Guard 4 The 1850 census report shows Thomas and his wife Caroline living in District 1 in Washington County, Maryland with two children Martha age 4 and William age 1. Also living with them is Ellen McCoy age 16. It is possible this is a sister to Caroline who is aged 24.
