Note: According to my grandmother, Myrtle was Black Dutch German (dark German) November 22, 1997 Dear Barbara, My name is Barbara Jones Kendrick. I am the oldest child of Mabel and Guy Jones. I have three brothers: Max, Edythe Earl, and Joel. Guy's parents were Edgar Royal and Myrtle Pullen Jones. Edgar had a brother Edythe and a brother Jay who died as a young man and never married . .. Edgar Royal's father was still living when I was born in 1933 at Potter, Arkansas. He visited around with children and acquaintances who would put him up for awhile and feed him. He was visiting his son Edythe at Alder Springs, Arkansas when I was born. He died before I was one year old. Edgar was 1/4 Cherokee Indian from his father . . . All I know about the Pullens are the stories Granny Jones told to me as a child. I spent a lot of time with her as a child after she moved to Grannis, Arkansas. The Pullens lived at England, Arkansas and London, Arkansas, when Granny was growing up. Dr. Pullen owned 1/2 interest in a drug store, a plantation and his wife ran a boarding house. They had a black cook named Della whose speciality was pies. Myrtle and her sisters where given piano lessons, taught to be fine seamstresses, and good cooks. I suspect Myrtle met Edgar at the boarding house. She became pregnant before her marriage to Edgar and this fact caused her father to disown her. Edgar took her to a cabin in the mountains out from Waldron. He traded horses and cattle and was not home much. He died before his youngest son ("Toot") was born. Myrtle was left to raise 8 children alone (my note: actually seven as Glynn had already passed away). There were many times when there was not enough food. They chopped cotton, picked peas and did anything they could to feed themselves. School only went to the eighth grade. As soon as Guy and Paul were old enough, they enlisted in the Navy to send money home to Myrtle to feed the younger children. Mable was able to go to college because of this money. Dr. Pullen died from an overdose of Morphine and alcohol, either intentional or accidental. Myrtle said they found him unconscious and got him outside and walked him for hours. They beat him with wet towels in an effort to revive him, but he did not respond. I would love to have any additional information you have collected. - Barbara Kendrick ------------------------------------------------------------------- Facts about Grandma Jones: Born October 10, 1883 in Ola, Arkansas Died March 5, 1960 at DeQueen General Hospital Services at Grannis Baptist Church 11:00 am on March 7, 1960 Officiating: Bro.
