Note: Advance Reporter Jan 28, 1926 "Much depends upon how land lays and how it is cared for, as to how long it will maintain its productivity. As an instance, there is a farm "down on Fourche," as we usually refer to it, near Parks, which has been in cultivation since 1883. And it was an old place then, likely had been in constant cultivation 50 or 75 years previous to this. The farm referred to is now owned and farmed by T.M Atchley, who has been farming this tract of land for the past thirty years or more. The past year Mr. Atchley produced around a bale of cotton to the acre. This land has deep red clay subsoil, as does most of tile up- land around Parks. No overflows touch it and from the amount of cotton now produced we naturally infer that the land has been reasonably well cared for, yet we are informed that it has been planted in cotton every year for several years past. "Forty years ago, this farm had a large apple orchard, some of the trees measuring near a foot in diameter, and seemingly at least fifty years old. We are told that there are a few of these old trees yet standing, or were at least a few years since. One variety from this orchard at the time referred to was the old Horse apple - a variety you never see now days. One room of the old log house on this place forty years ago is still standing, but has been framed over with lumber and the logs do not show from the outside. The same old barn is there yet, and taking it all in all the place yet looks natural "When the writer first knew of this place it belonged to Dr. G. Cox and Tom Jones who were at the time in the cattle business, and in the spring of 1893 they had more than 500 head bought up and lotted on this farm, then known as the "Dick Miller" place. This and subsequent bunches were driven to Kansas City market via the Indian Territory, each trip taking several weeks. At the time we refer to, or at least during the spring of '82 or '83 a terrific storm swept through and across the Fourche valley going north on through and across the Dutch Creek Valley."
