Note:   John Hale often told his children stories about the Civil War when as a young boy he and his friend would take the good horses and ride them away to keep the "bushwhackers" from stealing the livestock. He would tell them it was not unusual for the "bushwhackers" to loot, steal, and murder when they happened upon a remote homestead.
