Notes
a. Note:   Jonas Wood was given a deed by the Surveyor General of the state of New York, July 1, 1800, for Lot 31 containing 200 acres in the Town of Jay and County of Essex. Jonas first appears as head of the house on the census for Essex County, New York in 1800. There is a male living with Jonas which is probably his brother Sarill. He next is found November 3, 1801, acting as attorney for his father's family at the settlement of Ichabod Wood's estate. About 1802 he married Hannah Reed and went to Granville, New York to live; there James and Lucian their first two children were born. Sometime after May 1805 and before April 1807 Jonas moved back to Essex County, where their third child, Henry was born. There Jonas and Hannah built their home on the banks of the Great Ausable River in what is known today as Upper Jay Village. The house still stands today and is owned by Carole St. Charles and Michel DeMuska, husband and wife of Montreal Canada. The record of ownership from the time James Wood, son of Jonas, owned the property until today, is on file at the Court House in Elizabethtown, New York. Jonas served in the War of 1812, in Captain Jesse Tobey's Company, Sanford's Battalion, Aug 1813. He was elected Town Supervisor in 1812 and served one year. Jonas died May 30, 1830 and is buried in Mountain View Cemetery, Upper Jay Village, New York. For some unknown reason his estate was not probated until December 1830. Hannah his wife and James a son were made administrators. Bond was set at $1,000.00, Inventory was taken Jan. 15 1831. His most valuable household possessions were a clock valued at $16.00 and a Franklin Stove at $15.00. Reference: Probate Records of Essex County, New York.
