a. Note:   Served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. No military record has been found but his wife received a pension beginning June, 1917. Proof of service records signed by J. L. Jetton and J. R. McAteer states that they had known him since 1860 and that he (Robert Stewart Neal) was a Confederate soldier belonging to "McNairs Regiment and Hawthorn's brigade of Infantry of Arkansas" and was wounded at Jenkins Ferry. He is buried in the Little Missouri Cemetery near Chidester, Arkansas.
