Note: The following taken from a letter to Fredrick Gerhardt Bursch (Gay) from his brother Daniel F. Bursch, (Dan). Fredrick Gerhardt Bursch is the father of Samuel Welker Bursch & grandfather of Wilma, Bob and Rosalee. April 26, 1932 Now I must open up your question box and try to make satisfactory replies to what I find therein. I cannot say I am well posted as to our family history. It might have been better if we had inquired into this more fully in our youth. 1. Father was born April 10, 1840 at Hameln, an ancient town, in the Kingdom of Hanover which is now a province of Prussia. He was confirmed there in the old Minister Church of St. Boniface. During the Civil War he was a member of National Guard. I have heard that the members of the 13th Regiment, to which he belonged, were stationed at lamp-posts to prevent the lynching and hanging of negroes that was attempted during the Draft Riots. At that time he also belonged to a business men's association that was organized for the purpose of raising funds to pay bounties to substitutes for members as they were drafted for the war. He died April 20, 1918 age 78 years and 10 days. 2. Mother was born June 1, 1836 at Aachen (Aix-la-Chapelle) a very ancient town in Rhemish Prussia. The history of the old town goes back to the time of the Romans who were acquainted with its celebrated warm sulphur springs. She died Feb 1916 in her 80's. Note: The Father and Mother referred to in the above letter is the mother and father of Fredrick Gerhardt Bursch (great-grandparents of Wilma, Bob, and Rosalee). Father: Friedrich John William Bursch (this is the old German spelling of Friedrich) Mother: Anna Maria Hadeler. The above were the parents of 5 sons and 1 daughter. Fredrick Gerhardt Bursch was born Brooklyn, New York, Jan. 29, 1867 (Father of Samuel Welker Bursch--Grandfather of Wilma, Bob & Rosalee) They came to the United States when young and lived in Brooklyn, N.Y. for 60 years. He was a real estate operator and a dealer in salt. :Copied from Papers in the posession of Rosalee Bursch Niethamer. *********** F.G.B. Wedding Outfit Some clothing trousers for stage playing could be bought for one whole dollar, I invested. They were six inches too long but the mother-in-law to be cut most of that off. That with a Prince Albert coat and vest to match to which I fell heir after it got much shined and a donated shirt. This made me look so fine and feel so good that the witness presented us with a set of tin spoons, a long interesting story could follow. Copied from an old article published in the Buffalo Blade. ************* AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF FREDRICK G. BURSCH Born in the City of Brooklyn, N.Y., Jan. 29, 1867 very weak and sickly, the doctor declared I could not live, but a mother's prayers and faith prevailed. Schooling began in a Lutheran denominational school teaching both German and English. After learning to read and write I was placed in a public school leaving when in the seventh and went to school no more. Leaving home before 17 years of age. I went to Wahoo, Nebraska worked on farms for several years then began farming for myself. At the age of 21 I was united in marriage to Miss Chloe Solome Welker age 19. Thirteen children were born to us, 9 sons and 4 daughters. While bringing these children up we farmed and ranched in 4 states, Nebraska, New York, Oklahoma, and Kansas. We have children buried in 4 states. 9 children grew to manhood and womanhood two sons graduated from the Leland Stanford University getting both master and doctor degrees, the only two boys from the same family receiving these degrees from Stanford both are occupying good positions under the educational department in California. Two daughters with a four year college course from the Frankfort, Ind. having attended school at Campbell and McKinney, Texas and McPherson, Kansas and Kingswood, Kentucky. One daughter went to India as a missionary from the Nazarene Church going and returning twice and is now in America on account of her health. One of our sons accidently shot himself in S.W. Colorado and died age 33. One son manages for the Baker Construction Co. of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and died after a brief illness. Our oldest son graduated from the Manhattan A.C. At present (65 years of age) I am actively engaged in farming, raising crops and livestock. We have over 800 acres of land free of debt. I am sole owner of the Buffalo Lumber Yard, all profits going to Mission Rescue and Orphanage Work. We made arrangements with the missionary board of the Free Methodist Church to start an Orphanage in China to train up boys and girls under Christian infjuence to go out among their own people to preach the Gospel to help save China by their own people investing something like $7000 the work has been going on for a number of years. In St. Louis we purchased a fine building for 15 thousand dollars and turned it over to Mrs. Lydia A. Newberry to incorporate a Rescue Mission for erring colored girls, the only institution of the kind in Missouri. We have been enabled to give thousands of dollars to foreign missions, weak churches, needy students and so forth. We now have a church of our own in Buffalo, Kansas now as a mission. Having Sunday School and regular services. We have a children's service every Wednesday evening with an attendance of 30 to 60 each child getting a treat of popcorn, peanuts, candy or fruit and receiving helpful instruction spiritally and morally. We are planning to incorporate an orphanage here and now have four orphan children. We are glad to acknowledge that only as we trusted God have we been able to see anything accomplished we have no hobby but to preach the gospel. In all our efforts we had a faithful wife to stand by. We have lost a fortune, lost loved ones, been despised and persecuted. To overcome these things it takes the triumph of Grace. Never rode a bicycle. Never served as a juror. Never was taken to a hospital. Have trusted God to heal my body since 19 years of age. Whatever good I may have accomplished I owe it to the Grace of God. I belong to no secret organizations. I believe it is wrong to use tobacco in any form. laying tile Have lived a normal happy busy life Was nearly drowned once Close to death by accidents a number of times. *From papers in posession of Rosalee Bursch Niethamer. ********************* 1900 United States Federal Census about Fred Buisch Name: Fred Buisch [Fred Bursch] [Fred T Breisch] Age: 33 Birth Date: Jan 1867 Birthplace: New York Home in 1900: North Bluff, Lancaster, Nebraska [Lancaster] Race: White Gender: Male Relation to Head of House: Head Marital Status: Married Spouse's Name: Lorna Buisch Marriage Year: 1888 Years Married: 12 Father's Birthplace: Germany Mother's Birthplace: Germany Occupation: Farmer Fred Buisch 33 Lorna Buisch 31 Daniel Buisch 10 Annie M Buisch 9 Charles N Buisch 6 James Buisch 5 George W Buisch 3 Samuel Buisch 1 ********************* 1910 United States Federal Census about Fredrick G Bursch Name: Fredrick G Bursch Age in 1910: 43 Birth Year: 1867 Birthplace: New York Home in 1910: Clifton, Wilson, Kansas Race: White Gender: Male Relation to Head of House: Head Marital Status: Married Spouse's Name: C Salone Bursch Father's Birthplace: Germany Mother's Birthplace: Germany Fredrick G Bursch 43 C Salone Bursch 41 Daniel M Bursch 20 A May Bursch 18 Charles W Busch 17 James F Bursch 15 George W Bursch 13 Samuel W Bursch 11 Fredrick J W Bursch 7 Susie S Bursch 4 Frances H Bursch 1 3/12 [1] ****************************** 1920 United States Federal Census about Frederick Bursch Name: Frederick Bursch Age: 52 Birth Year: abt 1868 Birthplace: New York Home in 1920: Buffalo, Wilson, Kansas Race: White Gender: Male Relation to Head of House: Head Marital Status: Married Spouse's Name: Salome Bursch Father's Birthplace: Germany Mother's Birthplace: Germany Home Owned: Own Able to read: Yes Able to Write: Yes Frederick Bursch 52 Salome Bursch 50 George Bursch 22 Sam Bursch 20 Fred Bursch 17 Susie Bursch 13 Frances Bursch 11 The following taken from a letter to Fredrick Gerhardt Bursch (Gay) from his brother Daniel F.
