  RE: Excerpt taken from "SCHWICKERATH FAMILY" MEMORIS OF : Carl H Schwickerath
  At the age of 15 years, I lost my Mother... She died at only 39 years of age. And from then on life was more serious. Father was almost always too busy to pay much attention to us kids and altho "Grusmom" came to live with us, she was to old to handle such a mess of wild indians as we were.
 I guess that the conditions were that Father was very much discouraged and it worried him almost to desperation. Altho , He really didn't have so much cause for worry, then one night , after we had all gone to bed, Dad came in and woke us older kids and gave us the suprise of our lives+++ Told us he was a NEWLYWED, married Mary Hines earlier that evening, and explained to us the reason for his new venture+++ said we were all too young to be left without a Mother to take care of us. "Grusmom was getting to old for the big responsibility and without help soon would wear herself out looking after such a family of young kids.
 Of course we all knew Mary Hines as she lived all alone in a big house just around the corner from our home. But we didn't know her only by sight and had nothing against her ++or for her ++.
 We all got out of our beds and came downstairs to be introduced to our "NEW MOTHER" ++, after which the newlyweds went out to catch the late train for a short honeymoon trip.
 "Grusmom " didn't take kindly to the new arrangement and immediately made preparations to go back to Aunt Barbara McKunes home on the farm.... and we lost the best friend we ever had.."Grusmom"...left us and never came back into our home again. I couldn't blame her any... it was so soon after our own Mothers death.
 Us kids soon got used to our stepmother...She did the best she could for us..the younger kids soon grew to love her, but us older kids could never reconcile to having a stranger come to " boss us around"......
  "Grusmom": German for Grandmother
 Margaret Kinnen Schwickerath. Mother of Mathias Schwickerath
