Ewing, who owned the farm on which the post office is located, and who had charge of the office when it was established, named this town Climax. http://www.co.custer.ne.us/content/history_content Lured by the promise of free land of any type, these forty Kinkaid sections were quickly applied for, even though the land was considered "worthless". The Kinkaiders were unlike earlier settlers. Many were elderly, ailing, unmarried women. A few had a trade or a profession. Many of the Kinkaiders hoped to farm. They soon discovered that sandy soil was unsuitable for farming, and as a result went back from where they came. In 1909 Mary (Taylor) Ewing and her Civil War veteran husband, William, came from Iowa. The Ewing's settled in the Hays township, approximately 17 miles north of Arnold. Mrs. Ewing was related to the wife of an earlier Kinkaider, Raymond Forrester and also Mrs. Emmet (Tina Wells) Keyser, a fact that influenced their decision to come to this particular place. n 1909 a settler could establish a post office in his or her home by writing to Washington D.C., telling them how many patrons such an office would serve, the distance from the nearest mail delivery source, and suggesting a name for the new post office. Mary Ewing lost no time in making such an application. The new office would serve 100 patrons and was located 17 miles from the nearest mail source of Anselmo. She first submitted the name "Ewingville", but was rejected for it having too many letters. Her next choice of Climax was accepted. With the post office assured, Mrs. Ewing ordered in other needed supplies for the growing community. Supplies of cream, eggs, chickens and, even hogs were freighted in by wagon from Anselmo, never from Arnold. Anselmo was 17 miles southeast of Climax going over gentle rolling hills. Arnold was 17 miles south of Climax, with an extremely high hill just north of town. It was reported that a horse had a heart attack and died trying to pull a freight wagon up the big hill. http://blog.arnold.k12.ne.us/gps/global-positioning-of-history/towns/climax-ne-index/climax-town-story/
