Note: �Ctab�DAlexander was born at Fisher's Mills Nov.22, 1814 died Mar 20,1898, son of David and Agnes "Nancy" (MacDougald) Fisher�Ctab�D �Ctab�DRachel was born at Glenelg January 16,1813, died Sept.24, 1884, daughter of Adam McKeen and Jennet Taylor McKeen.�Ctab�D �Ctab�D �Ctab�D �Ctab�D Alexander and Rachel lived in Aspen. They had hard times and disappointments. Their first home, built on top of the hill, burned approx. 1842. They lost two daughters Janet and Grace who were 4 and 6 years at the time. Their housekeeper, who was thought to be a relative from Musquodoboit, also lost her life in the fire. Alexander was badly burned trying to rescue his daughters and housekeeper, who were hiding under the bed. When he emerged, all his clothes had been burned off his back, with only his collar remaining. Alexander and Rachel lost 5 other children in infancy. They had Charles born in 1841, Adam born in 1846 Agnes McDougald born 1848 and Louise B born 1858. From their first house on the hill, they had a good view of the St. Mary's River. One night in 1844, they spotted some travellers camped by the banks of the river across on the other side. A day or so later, they heard about a ship found floating in Country Harbour, which had been mutinied. The ship was the Saladin, about which one or more books have been written. She was carrying gold bullion and coins from South America. The crew responsible, took off, in different directions. Five were later captured, some in the St. Mary's area and some in Ohio. They were later hanged in Halifax. The travelers, who were camped by the river went upstream to a family by the name of Gunn, where they obtained a night's lodging. After breakfast, they left. When the wife lifted her baby out of the crib, they found a gold coin left in the cradle by one of the men, as payment for their hospitality. They felt sure later, that the travelers had been crew members of the fated Saladin. After the fire, Alexander rebuilt a temporary house, on the level below the former site. A permanent house was built in 1858. His great-great granddaugher now lives on the property. She has grandchildren, which makes the 7th generation of Alex and Rachel Fisher descendents.
