At an early day he removed from Franklin County to the State of Iowa, where he lived until the time of the Civil War, when he enlisted in the 37th Iowa Regiment. At that time he was far past middle life, and the reg- iment was composed largely, if not entirely, of men of near his own age. It was called the "gray-beard" regiment. He survived the war and died October 19, 1890, at an advanced age.
