Birth: CtabD1815 Nova Scotia, Canada Death: CtabDAug. 2, 1859 Concord Middlesex County Massachusetts, USA The date of death listed above is from Christa's death record and differs from the date on the stone. This stone was placed years after Christa died, and other dates on the stone are contradicted by death records. The following biography is based in part on a letter written by Christa's granddaughter Annie Rand. As Annie wrote this when she was elderly, and much information was secondhand, some of the details she gave on her family history are disputed by vital records and similar sources. Nevertheless, her letter provided some valuable clues that were essential in fleshing out Christa's history. Christa's death record says she was born Nova Scotia, and was the daughter "Archibald and Mary Taylor." She was born in 1815 or 1816. Annie Rand believed Christa's youngest children were born in St. Mary's, Nova Scotia. Vital records of several children also list St. Mary's as their place of birth. There was an Archibald and Mary (MacDonald) Taylor from St. Mary's. Archibald had been from Colchester County before moving to St. Mary's. The history of Colchester County said he had three sons and two daughters. Various online sources list the names of three sons and only one daughter (Elizabeth), born in the years 1809, 1810, 1812 and 1819. So Christa falls in this birth order. Further, the 1838 census for St Mary's lists a Matthew Thompson living immediately next to the households of Archibald and his son Duncan Taylor. Thus while there is no specific record that says this Christa was the daughter of that Archibald and Mary, there is little doubt that Christa is the "missing daughter" from that family group. In the mid-1830s Christa married widower Mathew Thompson, who had four or more young children from his first marriage. Mathew was about 20 years her senior. About 1846 Matthew and Christa relocated to Concord, Massachusetts, where Mathew worked as a laborer. In 1850 the last known child of Mathew and Christa was born, an unnamed daughter who lived just 12 hours. Annie Rand said she did not know the names of all of Mathew's children by his two wives, though she had been told he had 14 children in all. Christa Ann died of tuberculosis in 1859. Three of Mathew's adult children also died of tuberculosis; Mary at age 30 in 1854, Elisabeth Spear at age 23 in 1865, and James at age 20 in 1866. After Christa's death, Mathew moved to Cambridge. At least one of Christa's siblings also moved to the Massachusetts. Michael Wallace Taylor arrived in 1833, married two years later and raised a family in Plymouth. He enlisted and served for about a year during the Civil War. He died of disease in North Carolina in 1862.
