Note: In 1860, Miss Emma L. Taylor took charge of the school. She held the position seventeen years and was succeeded by Miss E. F. Billings, Miss Carrie Clark and Mrs. David S. Clark. The academy celebrated its semi-centennial on July I, 1873. The academy is leased by the town of Derry for one of its district grammar schools. Birth: �Ctab�DAug. 25, 1827 Death: �Ctab�DDec. 3, 1886 For many years she was the preceptress of Adams Female Seminary in East Derry, New Hampshire. Emma L. Taylor gave the sum of one thousand dollars to the town for what is now the Taylor library in East Derry, NH. Her sister Harriet did the same. Emma also left the same sum towards the erection of the Derry Civil War Monument. The town appropriated $2,000 to add to the sum that Emma bequeathed. Notice from The New England Magazine and Bay State Monthly Volume 5 November 1886 Miss Emma Taylor, of St. Johnsbury, Vt., sister of Dr. Samuel Taylor, president of Phillips' Andover Academy and of the wife of Governor Fairbanks, of Vermont, died in December. She was a native of Derry, N.H. and was at one time a teacher in St.Johnsbury Academy. Top photo shows a plaque located on Island Pond Road, Derry, New Hampshire.
