Note: 1790 NY CENSUS: Samuel Caskie 2M over 16-one is Samuel SR, not sure of the other. May be Samuel JR. 1M under 16-Martin (age abt 7) 4F over 16-Sarah, Huldah, Mary & Jane Margaret was not born yet. I am wondering if maybe Samuel SR was married before Sarah and the other male listed is Samuel JR. By looking at the other Census's he does not fit into the age groups. If he is the other male than Samuel would have to of been born abt 1774 or 1775. So not sure until I can find more documentation on him. i did receive a Will of some sort from Iris Caskey for Samuel SR and it claims his son, Samuel D. Caskey, to have already been deceased in 1833. I have to find where this Will came from for information in it does not add up. I am just about sure of one thing that the Samuel who married Lea Potter is not the same one as listed for Samuel SR's son. I believe he is the s/o John & Mary Caskey. With note for Mary, here has been no finding of her being a sister to Sarah. In fact from other Decker researchers, Sarah does not have a sister, just brother's. Mary may have been a aunt or a cousin at that. For Mary herself I have been unable to find any documentation of her. In recent discoveries It seems that Mary may not even be a Decker. There has been no proof found as of yet what her surname is. It pretty much comes down to assumptions. Also from looking at other census records, Samuel Sr's birth seems to fit more accurately with him being born 1755 instead of 1760. However there has been no proof of when he was actually born that I can find as of yet. When looking at naming patterns I have found that the first male born was named after the father's father and the second was named after the mother's father. Could this hold true here. Samuel would of been the first born. Now clearly this holds true for Martin. Sarah's father was Martinus. Now I believe Martin was born with the same name, Martinus, but went by Martin. When he shows up for his first census taking he is known as Martinus and than later just Martin. Now the naming goes further for other sons but since Samuel only had two I will not go into them. That is only two have been found so far. Now for the females, the first born is usually named after the mother's mother except when there is a second wife, which if true would be Sarah being the second wife. This might explain where Hulda's name came from. Could Samuel SR have been married to a Huldah and they had Samuel JR?? The second daughter would be named after the father's mother. Their second child was Mary. Can this be Samuel's mother's name?? The third daughter, Jane, would be named after the mother. In most cases Sarah usually carries the middle Jane and since Jane is usually associated as being a middle name most likely Jane's first name was Sarah and just known as Jane. The fourth daughter, Margaret, is named after either the mother's or father's oldest sister. Now since Sarah has no sisters than could Margaret be named after her Samuel SR's oldest sister?? There really is not much proof in all of this. I think if you went back another generation you could probably rely on this naming system better. If you look at other Caskey's families for Samuel SR's time some hold true and some do not. So it looks like naming traditions were starting to break up. Samuel SR may have known Mary Cox and she lived with him. It has been assumed that they may have been married but nothing can be found to support that. The unknown children that show up later can be hers or they can be children of another relative's. 1800 NY CENSUS: Samuel CasHie: 1M under 10-not sure 1M 16-26-Martin (age abt 17) 1M 26-45-Samuel SR (age abt 45) 1F under 10-Jane (abt age 10, have not found proof of age yet. She could have been born 1787/89.So not sure if her or not.) 1F 10-16-Mary (age abt 15) (or this could be Jane) 1F 16-26-Huldah (age abt 19) (or this could be Mary & Huldah has already left the household.) 1F 26-45-I am not sure but could be Mary Cox. Still no proof of their acquaintance. If together they may of had children or they could have been hers from a previous marriage. 1810 NY CENSUS: Samuel Caskey: 1M 10 & under-? 1M 10-16-? 1M 26-45-? 1M 45 & up-Samuel SR 1F 10-16-? 1F 16-26-might be Jane. Husband does not show up until 1820. Martin, Mary & Huldah would have all been married and on there own. In fact Mary's husband shows up 1810 & as well as Martin shows up for 1810 census taking. Can not find Huldah but believe she may of lived in PA. Her husband died in Pike Co., PA. 1820 NY CENSUS: Samuel Caskey: 1M 10-16-? 1M 16-26-? 1M 45 & up-Samuel SR 1F 10 & under-? 1F 45 & up-? 8 Apr 1825 NY CENSUS: 4M-# of all males including head 2F-# of all females including head 1M-# of all men qualified to vote 1F-# of females unwed, under age 16.
