a. Note:   Notes from Cecelia Lutz. John Hoffman was a truck farmer in Bridgeville, Pennsylvania and sold property rights for coal and oil. HISTORY OF ST. JOHN CAPISTRAN CHURCH - The first St. John Capistran Church was erected on land donated by John M. Hoffman. Mr. Hoffman was the son of a farmer who settled in the area in 1860. This chapel, a mission of St. Agatha Church, Bridgeville, was dedicated December 23, 1923. From 1923 to 1938 Mass was celebrated in the chapel once a month, beginning January of 1938, Mass was celebrated every Sunday.......... In March of 1998 we visited St. John Capistran Roman Catholic Church in Beadling, Pennsylvania. Inside the church we found a list of items donated to the church by the Hoffman and Lutz families. Hoffman To get to the church take Rt. 60 to Pittsburgh and exit on Rt. 50. Then to Bower Hill Rd. to Painters Run Rd. to McMillen Rd. Ft. Couch Rd., where the Hoffman home is, is off of McMillen to the left just a short distance from the church. WILL OF JOHN HOFFMAN ************************* In the name of God, Amen - I John Hoffman of Upper St. Clair Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, being of sound mind and memory and calling to mind the uncertainty of human life, do make and publish this my last will and testament hereby revoking and making null and void all other wills by me heretofore made. My Will is, that my physicians charges and my funeral expenses shall be payed out of my estate. I give, devise, and bequeath to my son John H. Hoffman, all the surface of the farm on which he now resides, being the same, which I hold by deed from Frederick Upperman and wife, together with all buildings and improvements thereon. I give and bequeath to my son Peter Hoffman all the surface of the farm on which he now resides, being he same which I hold by deed from Quincy Connor and wife. I will and bequeath to my daughter Catherine, three thousand dollars, one thousand of which shall be payed to her one year after my decease, of which sum my son John H. shall pay two hundred dollars, and my son Peter eight hundred dollars. I also direct my executor to sell the coal underlying my farms herin mentioned so soon after my decease as a just and reasonable price can be obtained thereof and within one year from the confirmation of such sale, provided he has received sufficient of the purchase money, he shall pay to my daughter Catharine two thousand dollars. The remainder of the money derived from the sale of said coal shall be equally (sic) divided (last two words are underlined) between my sons John H. Hoffman and Peter Hoffman share and share alike. It is also my will, that my son John H. Hoffman shall pay a note given by me to Mrs. Snyder of Scott Township for eighteen hundred dollars, or so much of it as shall remain unpaid at my decease and I do hereby declare that it is my will, that he my son John H. shall pay the note at his own expense and nothing in this will shall be so construed as to give any one recorse (sic) upon any moneys, or property herin willed, devised or bequeathed or given to my son Peter or daughter Catherine. I also leave to my son Peter all my furniture, bedding, clothes and tools. Also, I prefer my son John H. as executor of my estate. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this tenth day of September the year of our Lord one Thousand eight hundred and ninety two. This instrument was signed by John Hoffman the testator in our presence, and by him declaired (sic) to be his last will and testament. Attesting Witnesses: John Seeger Warren W. Philips the subscribing witnesses to the forgoing instrument of ..............purporting to be the last Will and Testament of John Hoffman deceased, and on their solemn oath did depose and say, that they were present and did see and hear, John Hoffman the testator therein named, sign, seal, publish and declare the same as and for his last Will and Testament and at the time of so doing he was of sound mind and memory to the best of their knowledge and belief and at his request and in his presence they subscribed their names as witnesses thereunto. Philips Now, Sept. 6th A.D. 1898 The Testimony of the above named witnesses being sufficient I do hereby admit the foregoing will to probate and order the same to be recorded as such.
