MARY'S HELP OF CHRISTIANS (Catholic) CHURCH......Sunday May 28th, 1905 and was xeroxed and turned over to Carnegie Library in 1993. During the years 1840 to 1850 there was a small colony of German Catholics settled on both sides of Chartiers Creek near it's mouth. In 1854 there were about forty families and two English speaking Catholics within a ten mile radius of Chartiers Creek, the center being about one quarter mile above what is now (1905) called Duffs Station. it being too far to walk to St. Philomena's Church at Bayerstown, or St. Michaels' at Brownstown, this group wanted a church of their own. Bishop M. O'Connor gave his blessing along with that of the Passionist Fathers at St. Michael's. On 12 Aug. 1854 they purchased a tract of 49 perches on the north side of Chartiers creek, then Robinson Twp. from Charles and Josephine Hambel. During the summer of 1855 a neat little brick structure 20x40 feet was built. Fr. P. Lukas laid the cornerstone and blessed the completed Church. 29 Apr. 1856 the group purchased 1 acre & 129 perches of land adjoining the first from the Hambels. Names of the Pioneers were Jacob May, Rudolph Heiserer, Luke Heiserer, John Lutz, Charles Hambel, John Hartmann, Ignatz Wagner, John Fischer, John Kaub, John Sauer, Lorenz Hufnagel, John Hook, John Engelmeier, James Russell, Mr. McGreevy, George Hammer, Ferdinand Noe, Adam Hoover, Lawrence Heinauer, Andrew Rosenberger, Charles Obermann, Valentine Obermann, Melchior Kappler, Adam Hufnagel, Daniel Lutz, Mr. Wannermacher, Peter Rocke, John A.
