Notes
a. Note:   The Cullman Times Thursday October 13, 1955 - WEEK END - Four Georgia Residents Killed Here Sunday - County accidents during the three day period beginning Saturday morning and ending Monday night took the lives of six and placed two in the Cullman hospital. Only two of the dead were residents of Cullman County while the other four were Georgia residents. A head on collision between two cars ten miles east of here about 5:30 p.m. Sunday took the heaviest toll, taking the lives of four in one family. It was one of the state's worst accidents of the year. Killed in the accident, (all passengers of one car) were: Delbert Cleveland Henry, 16; his mother, Mrs. Louise Henry 40; his grandmother, Mrs. Effie Griffes, 65, all of Villa Rica, Ga. Route 2; and Mrs. Georgia Bell Mayfield, East Point, Ga. The only survivor of the death car is 14-year-old Charles Asbury Mayfield, son of Mrs. Georgia Mayfield, one of the dead. He is in fair condition in the Cullman hospital. Also in the Cullman hospital is Raymond V. Tyler, 38, of Route 2 Hanceville and Rome, Ga. He was the driver of the other car involved in the accident. According to State Patrolman Kenneth Davenport, the accident occurred on U.S. 278 about 5:30 p.m. Sunday. It involved a 1955 Chevrolet car, driven by Delbert Henry, and a 1938 Ford convertible, driven by Raymond Tyler. The Georgia family were passengers of the Chevrolet. Patrolman Davenport stated that Tyler was headed west and had pulled out to the left side of the road to pass a line of cars. Witnesses said that he attempted to pass four cars and could not get back in the line as he saw the Chevrolet, headed east, coming toward him. The Georgia family had been to a relative's birthday party in Decatur, Ala., and were headed home to Georgia. A mass funeral was held at 2 p.m. yesterday in Decatur for the four dead. The funeral was held at the Southside Baptist Church and interment was at Oak View Memorial Gardens.
