Notes
a. Note:   John, Jr came to Sandy River Township in 1781 with his mother and step-father. They settled on front lot #17 west side. From A History of the Town of Industry, Franklin County, Maine; Page 49: John and Ebenezer, stepsons of Jonathan Knowlton, commenced a clearing on his section of the Gore, just west of the road leading to the Wesley N. Luce farm, in 1792. These gentlemen built a convenient log-house, and as both were unmarried, spent the following winter there in single blessedness. Chesterville was incorporated on February 20, 1802 from Chester Plantation. It annexed land from Wilton in 1811 and Vienna in 1847 to complete its current area. ... centers, Chesterville has grown modestly Later John moved to New Vineyard and then to Chesterville where he died in 1839. John also was known as "Deacon" John Oakes because of his dedicated affiliation with the Baptist Church. The Sandy River by Vincent York Temple-The first saw mill was built by John Oaks and it was in operation in 1806. It was on the Temple Stream at the point where the Valley opens into the Intervale. Information on all of the above sent by Mrs Raymond Lent, a descendant of Jonathan and Mary Oakes Blunt Knowlton From Family and Local Histories: Biographical review : this volume contains biographical sketches of leading citizens of Franklin and Oxford Counties, Maine. Page 168 John Oakes Jr., who was born in Massachusetts in 1770, accompanied his mother and step-father to Farmington, being, it is said, the first white boy brought by any settler to that town. Shortly afterward he removed to New Vineyard; and he eventually settled upon one hundred and sixty acres of wild land, which he improved into a good farm. He resided there for a few years, then removed to Chesterville, where he bought of his brother Eben and John Corbett the farm of three hundred and twenty-five acres, which has been known as the Oakes homestead. In politics he acted with the Democratic party. He was also favorably known throughout this area as Deacon John Oakes, from his official connection with the Baptist church. He died at the homestead aged sixty-nine years.
