a. Note:   From Family and Local Histories: Biographical review : this volume contains biographical sketches of leading citizens of Franklin and Oxford Counties, Maine. Page 168 John Oakes, Having been among the minute-men who took part in the battles of Lexington and Bunker Hill,and died from the effects of exposure some three months after the last-named struggle. Family legend has it that John was among the minute-men who took part in the battle of Lexington and Bunker Hill. It is said that after the battle on June 17, 1775, when he was on his way home in Medford, John sat down on the grass to rest. He fell asleep and contracted a cold from which he suffered complications that caused his death a few weeks later. Information also from Mrs. Raymond L. Lent-Descendant of Mary Blunt Oakes and Jonathan Knowlton. John is listed as dec'd at the baptisms of John, Ebenezer and Mary on May 12, 1776 C.R.1.--Church Record First Parish Unitarian.
