Notes
a. Note:   John, Jr came to Sandy River Township in 1781 with his mother and step-father. They settled on front lot #17 west side. John and Ebenezer, stepsons of Jonathan Knowlton, commenced a clearing on his section of the Gore, just west of the road leading to the Wesley N. Luce farm, in 1792. These gentlemen built a convenient log-house, and as both were unmarried, spent the following winter there in single blessedness. Later John moved to New Vineyard and then to Chesterville where he died in 1839. John also was known as "Deacon" John Oakes because of his dedicated affiliation with the Baptist Church. The Sandy River by Vincent York Temple-The first saw mill was built by John Oaks and it was in operation in 1806. It was on the Temple Stream at the point where the Valley opens into the Intervale. Information on all of the above sent by Mrs Raymond Lent, a descendant of Jonathan and Mary Oakes Blunt Knowlton
