The following are names of settlers who were living in 1810 in t he to wn of Troupsburgh, which then comprised nearly all the territo ry in the co unty south of Canisteo River, Beginning on the east side, t he settlers we re Caleb Smith, Daniel Johnson, Lemuel Benham, Breakhill Pa trick, Samu el B. Rice, Nathaniel Mallory, Elijah Johnson, Joseph Smith, R eazin Sear le and Bethuel Tubbs. Further West, on the old State Road, we re Ebenezer S pencer, Andrew Simpson, and a family of Marlatts, Elisha Han ce, Philip Cad y, Elijah Cady, Samuel Cady, Peter Cady, Caleb Colvin, Matt hew Grinnold s, William Card, Charles Card; and west of the old State Roa d, were Nath an Coffin, Henry Garrison, Edmund Robinson, Jeremiah Nudd. T he last thr ee came in 1812, Alanson Perry came in 1810. There were some o ther he re in an early day, as by the census of 1815, there were over 5 00 inhabita nts.� Daniel Johnson was Supervisor till 1812, and Charles Ca rd from 18 13 to 1819. Samuel Rice was Town Clerk for about twenty year s. The first g rist-mill was built by Caleb Smith, the second by George Ma rtin in 1812. � There was but little improvement made for several years, a nd many of the f irst settlers became discouraged and emigrated to the Wes t, and the town s eemed to be at a stand. Those remaining have become comf ortable in circums tances.� The Brotzman�s, Andrew Boyd, the Rowleys, a nd John Craig and ear ly settlers of Jasper.
