a. Note:   THE METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH OF JASPER. The first meetings of this society, held in the town of Jasper, were u nd er the auspices of Mrs. S. A. Grinolds and Mrs. Smith, in 1818, who a re sa id to have been the only Methodists in the town at that date. Rev. - ---- B uel was the first preacher. As a result of his labors there was a r eviva l, and a class was formed under his preaching, of which Uzal McMin ds was m ade class-leader. Mrs. McMinds, Louis Hayes and wife, Samuel Cad y, who bec ame a local preacher; Mrs. Cady, Hollis Cady and wife, Jonath an Cady and w ife, Hon. Samuel Griggs, afterwards of Troupsburgh, and h is wife, a Mr. Ma rlatt and wife, and some others, uniting in forming t he first class. Meeti ngs were held in the school-house at Marlatt's Corne rs, and as late as 18 34 were held at the present village, and at the o ld corners below, in t he school-houses, until the erection of the prese nt church. Revs. James Br onson, ----- Magee, ----- Peck, Micah Sager, a nd Asa Orcutt were early pre achers, traveling a long circuit and meeti ng their appointments once in fo ur weeks. Rev. Mr. Atchison, who preach ed here in 1830, is well remember ed as a man of peculiarly regular habit s, who allowed nothing to interfe re with his fixed hours for eating, slee p, or study, no matter what the su rroundings might be.
