Source: Old Fulton NY Post Cards Website Penn Yan Democrat, Penn Yan, NY Friday, June 14, 1935, Pg 8 Mr and Mrs Arthur Buckle spent Sunday with her father and sister, at Spr in gwater, Livingston Co., NY. NOTE: Tecla Buckle visited her father & sister: Uriah Cecil Mill er & h is oldest daugher, Irene Miller. The focus of the conversation on this visit was most likely over h ow to ra ise money to bail out the Springwater farm from bankruptcy proceedings. Tecla was very instrumental in raisi ng th at needed money from her school teaching wages, plus a larger sum fr om bo th her husband, Arthur Buckle, and Tecla's significant long time boy frien d, that she never gave up after marriage. The Springwater property was for a few years, in Tecla's name, but sh e, mo st of that time, was only an occasional visitor to it. Her pare nt s, UC & Jennie Miller, former owners of dormitory property in Alfre d, NY a nd still owned the farm in Troupsburg, NY were now living on the S pringwat er farm. Then her sister, Irene Miller, gave up her teaching car eer, to c ome to Springwater to manage that farm, at her father's urging s. When Ire ne Miller showed signs of being able to meet the mortgage com mitments, h er father, UC Miller and sister, Tecla, turned the farm owners hip ov er to Irene. Irene made the last mortgage payment on that fa rm in the ear ly 1950s. Further NOTE: My parents, Arvade & Margaret Miller, were the first on es s ent to manage that farm by his parents, UC and Jennie Miller. My pa ren ts accepted the obligation to make the mortgage payments without owner sh ip of the farm. My dad was very efficient at farming, but not go od at fin ancial management. He turned the farm revenue over to my mother 's respons ibility and she spent it on clothes and shoes for herself. Th is was duri ng the Great Depression years when most households were on a v ery lean bud get. The end result was the farm was in the process of forec losure by t he Seward Bank that I believe held the mortgage. Upon learni ng the mes sy financial state of the farm, UC & Jennie came to Springwat er to liv e. They were an elderly couple at that time and had their han ds full of m ore problems then they could fix. Jennie had to evict my mot her from t he farm house in order to take over the financial managemen t. Dad found a partment quarters on the second floor of the Hardware/Dr ug store at t he 4 corners and continued being paid farm labor wages on th at farm throu gh his mother, Jennie Miller. Lack of paying the apartme nt rent caus ed my parents and their 2 toddler children and an infant daug hter to be ev icted. The infant daughter soon died due to a lack of mate rnal care. My parents then moved to the rundown cottage located in the meadow ne ar t he creek on the farm and this was the place where I was born in 1 93 8. My father then went to work for the Railway Signal Company in Roche ste r, NY and he did his banking with his mother. It was the money th at s he saved for him, that was used to buy the small house & property ne xt do or to the farm. I and my 6 siblings grew up there. My father, ti ri ng of factory work before WW II was over, wanted to take up farming a ga in and on that small piece of property, he became a poultry farmer.
