Mrs Allen and her husband had trouble and for the pa st 6 mont hs have been living apart. When the child was born Saturday, M rs Allen as ked for her husband, being anxious that he see his child. Mr Allen and h is little son went to the home of Mrs Allen and proceed ed at once to the s ick woman's bedside. The husband sat in a chair ne ar the bed, talki ng to his wife, and holding the little 3 year old boy in his lap. suddenly Mrs Allen reached under the pillow and drew out a 32-calibre revolver and without warning fired 6 shots at close ran ge into her husband's bod y. Mr Allen fell to the floor and died instantly. Two of the bullets pierced the boy's body and the little fellow died an hour later. That Mrs Allen did not shoot her husband--and little son in cold blood or in insane passion, as first reported in dispatches sent out, is evident from an investigation made by the coroner. In a statement he says that it is evident the woman acted in self defense while protecting herself and babies from attack by her husband. O ne shot went wild and struck the little boy, inflicting injuries that cau sed his death also. Mrs Allen says her husband deserted her last Septemb er and that since then he h ad been trying to get the children. She says her husband came to the house Sunday afternoon to take the older children away. Mrs Allen declares her husband attacked her with a razor and that she drew the revolver from uner her pillow and fired. The first shot struck him in the hip, but the second one pierced his side and caused his instant death. Mrs Allen is in a critical condition. She is only 36 years old but has given birth to 12 children since her marriage to Allen some 18 years ago. Ten of them are still living. The family was well to do and prominent in society. Allen was a farmer and a traveling dentist. He was about 50 years of age. Yet another piece of journalism: The Wellsboro Gazette, Wellsboro, Tioga, PA April 28, 1910 Held For Murder. Mrs Ella Allen, who on Sunday, April 3 shot and killed her husband and her 5 year old son of West Union, just over t he Sta te line in Steuben county, has been held for trial at the September term of court of the charge of murder in the second degree. She was taken to the Bath Jail from Rexville last Thursday. She carried with her t he little girl, born the night before the double murder. A new version of the crime has been unearthed and if it can be substantiated, it will prove, that the Allen murder was as brutal and cold-blooded a crime as was ever committed in Steuben County. Two daughters, Laur a, aged 9, and Florence, aged 6, tell the same story, and differ radic al ly from the self-defense theory. The children are both small, and whe th er the court will accept their testimony or not, remains to be see n. Th ey have been cared for by relatives since, and this is the story they tel l: They say that Allen came to the house on that fatal Sunday afternoon. The children were glad to see him, and he stood looking out t he wind ow talking with them. The woman, it is said, took the revolver fr om und er the pillow and taking careful aim fired. The bullet struck him in the back and he fell. Then they say the mother got out of bed and dragged the dying man across the floor and fired another shot into his head. He lay gasping on the floor and they say the mother held her hand over the man's face to stop his breathing. After he was dead she dug the razor out of the old red cupboard nearby, and placed it near his hand. ..............It is generally believed that the outcome of the trial in September will be the commitment of Mrs. Allen to Mattewan Asylum for the Criminally Insane. Wellsville Daily Reporter, Wellsville, NY May 5, 1910, Pg 3 Mrs Ella Allen, the West Union Woman Charged With Murder, Will Be Examined by a Commission. Tomorrow is the date set for the adjourned examination of Mrs Ella Alle n, the West Union woman who on Sunday, April 3rd, shot and killed her husb and, Dr. Adelbert J. Allen and her little son, Lloyd. Mrs Allen and her m onth old daughter, Wilda, was taken from Bath jail today to Rexville, as t he law provides that she must be present before the justice on the date ag reed upon. The hearing to be held on Friday was to take the testimo ny of Mildred Allen, the twelve year old daughter who was the principal wi tness for the defense. Her death last week, however, has made a further e xamination unnecessary. Mrs Allen has stood her confinement in the coun ty jail very well. She showed some evidence of grief when told of Mildred 's death and expressed a desire to attend the funeral. But in general s he is more contented in the county jail than she has been in some time. S he has good care and good food and seems to appreciate it. Laura, a young er child, who has been very ill with pneumonia at the home of Edward Saund ers, her uncle, is now nearly recovered. She is said to have begged her r elatives to take her away before her mother gets back "so mamma can't sho ot me too." This is the child that has told the story of her mother's co ld blooded attack upon her father, while his back was turned and of her sh ooting the little boy when he ran out of the door frightened by the terrib le murder. She as well as her brother, Lester tell an entirely differe nt story of the crime than the one related by the woman. The grave myste ry that promised such a real sensation has been solved, Robert McGill, a r esident of that section comes forward with a statement that he dug the tre nch in an effort to locate a bed of gravel. Rumors had been thick about R exville that Mrs Allen had dug this trench and intended to bury her husba nd there after she had killed him. The McGill statement will put an e nd to these rumors. There are two courses open to the attorneys for t he defense at the present time. They may waive the examination of Mrs All en and allow her to be held for the grand jury which meets in Hornell in S eptember, or they may apply to the courts for a commission to examine t he murderess as to her sanity. It is said that there is little doubt th at the woman is of unsound mind. The woman has practically no defen ce to offer and it is likely that the attorneys for her will try to keep t he case from ever coming to trial in court. THE SAUNDERS SETTLEMENT AT WEST UNION AGAIN IN THE LIMELIGHT. A Preliminary Hearing Before Justice C.C. Burrell of This Place at Which Several witnesses Were Sworn. -- Seeking Evidence to Lay Before the Grand Jury. The Saunders settlement in the town of West Union again stepped into the spot light when preliminary hearing was had before justice Charles C. Burrell August 25, at his chambers in this place. David Saunders a well known resident of West Union and brother of Mrs. Adelbert Allen, who is now in the county jail on the charge of murdering her husband and son, was present at the hearing. Neither he nor his wife were sworn. A number of witnesses were present and were sworn. the subpoenas served on them read as follows: " Having reason to suppose an offence has been committed, and for the purpose of investigating whether it has been committed, you are commanded to appear." The witnesses were James Lampman, Mrs. Flora Loper, Frank Short and Mi ss W ilkinson of Young Hickory. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lewis of Saunders. Mr s. Harvey Cornell and Mrs. Betsy Cummings of Troupsburg. James Lampman, Mrs. Flora Loper and Mrs. David Saunders are brother and sisters of Pea rl Lampman who died last January. The matter has been under investigation for some time. The evidence is b ei ng taken for the purpose of being laid before the Steuben county grand jury at some future date. The Saunders section is again excited from head to foot and startling developments are possible.
