THE TIMES Canisteo, Steuben County, New York, September 7, 1910 - Front Page (center) EVIDENCE WAS TAKEN THE SAUNDERS SETTLEMENT AT WEST UNION AGAIN IN THE LIMELIGHT. A Preliminary Hearing Before Justice C.C. Burrell of This Place at Which Several witnesses Were Sworn. -- Seeking Evidence to Lay Before the Grand Jury. The Saunders settlement in the town of West Union again stepped into t he s pot light when preliminary hearing was had before justice Charl es C. Burre ll August 25, at his chambers in this place. David Saunde rs a well known r esident of West Union and brother of Mrs. Adelbert Alle n, who is now in t he county jail on the charge of murdering her husband a nd son, was prese nt at the hearing. Neither he nor his wife were sworn. A number of witnesses were present and were sworn. the subpoenas se rv ed on them read as follows: " Having reason to suppose an offence has been committed, and for the pu rp ose of investigating whether it has been committed, you are command ed to a ppear." The witnesses were James Lampman, Mrs. Flora Loper, Frank Short and Mi ss W ilkinson of Young Hickory. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lewis of Saunders. Mr s. Ha rvey Cornell and Mrs. Betsy Cummings of Troupsburg. James Lampman, M rs. Fl ora Loper and Mrs. David Saunders are brother and sisters of Pea rl Lampm an who died last January. The matter has been under investigation for some time. The evidence is b ei ng taken for the purpose of being laid before the Steuben county gra nd ju ry at some future date. The Saunders section is again excited fr om he ad to foot and startling developments are possible.
