Note: Historical Gazetteer of Steuben County, New York (1891, page 564) has th is to say about Joshua Sanders: "Joshua Sanders was born in New Hampshire, and came to West Union in 184 3, where he located in the southeast part of the town. Previous to settli ng here he had lived in Ohio and in Livingston county in this state. H is son Philip R. Sanders is still a resident here, where he has a fa rm of five hundred acres." The Sanders family can be traced back with absolute certainty at present o nly as far as Robert, the grandfather of Dr. Moses Chapin Sanders, who w as living in Mendon, Massachusetts, at least as early as 1746. There see ms good reason to believe, however, that the surname in generations pri or to this Robert was spelled Sanderson, and that the family is descend ed from Deacon Robert Sanderson (1608-1693), earliest of the great New Eng land silversmiths. The compiler is much indebted to Mr. Edmund L. Hope Cemetery, Susanna Saunders Landphere (1/1/ 17 84 to 1863) her husband, Asa (2/7/1779 to 1853).
