Alice came out of St Mary's in late 1923, to be a live in home help for the
family of Robert E Hogan, an attorney of Sharidan Road, Chicago. She liked the
family and was with them for a little over two years, when she married Jim
Patton, on 18 Nov 1927, (or Oct of 1926, according to daughter Gerrie), he had
also been in St Mary's Training School. The marriage was never consummated, as
they say, but they set up house together and after a number of years the couple
applied to adopt a child. They finally succeeded in getting a baby girl which
they named Patricia. Meanwhile Alice felt that Jim had become too overt in his
relationships with other men and sought the aid of the Church authorities in
having the marriage annulled, this was in 1932 or 3. This annulment took about a
year to implement, but though it went through without a hitch, it also meant
that the child, Patricia, had to be returned to the adoption authorities. The
marriage to Jim Patton had lasted six years in all, but you can see where and
how the name Patricia entered the family tradition.
I don't remember Alice ever working, but when she was younger, even before
she married Clarence Gudmundson, she was, like her mother and sister Kit, a
seamstress. There was a time after the war when she and Kit were planning to
work together to do a garment manufactory business, but it never really got off
 the ground.
Alice said it was her Aunt Nellie who collected a fairly extensive file on
Kavanagh genealogy, a part of which showed a link to General George Brinton
McClellan, (1826-85) from Pennsylvania, son of George McClellan, (1796-1847) and
some time CC of the Army of the Potomac in the Civil War. He was also the
unsuccessful Presidential Candidate in 1864 against Abraham Lincoln. There is
an 1887 autobiography titled, "McClellan's Own Story." It seems that Nell also
had another link that showed descent through marriage, to Anne Boleyn, (1507-36)
2nd wife of Henry VIII, and mother of Elizabeth I. Of course, none of this is
verified, but it could be true? Checking it out will have to be a job for the
 future. AJC 1998
