Note: A letter by Joh. Ulrich Giezendanner, a pietist who had sought religious toleration in Carolina, of Apr. 23, 1737, contains the sad information that two of the children died on the voyage and the father himself ten days after arrival in Carolina. At present, the widow of Nicholas Dilles, rifleman from Brittelen, is here. She lives nearby on a little farm. She sends you greetings and asks that you greet her people and tell them it took her fifteen weeks to cross the ocean and that her husband died ten days after they reached Charleston. Had he lived, he would have had to earn the balance of their travel cost. Two weeks earlier, 2 of her children died on board the ship. She is going to stay here with her remaining 4 children as long as it pleases God to let her. One should bear her lovinly in mind. 1737 Oct 8 Surv. Lot 393 + 250 acres (Mrs. Anna Maria Till) widow. Giessendanner) 1758 On Friday May 19th died and on Saturday May 20th was interred in the Plantation of John Shaumloffel, in Orangeburgh Township the Body of --- wife of the said John Shaumloffel.
