The Howard Courant-Citizen, Howard, Elk County, Kansas, Thursday, November 30, 1978 OBITUARY--ORVEL RICHARDSON Orvel Richardson, son of Julia and Henry Richardson, was born September 21, 1895 in DeValls Bluff, Arkansas and departed this life in Wichita, Kansas on November 14, 1978 at the age of 83 years, 1 month and 22 days. At the age of four he came to Greenwood County, Kansas with his parents. When he was 14, they moved to a farm in Elk County. He started working out as a farm hand for a small wage. He grew up in the Western Park Community and was a member of this church. September 18, 1917 he enlisted in the army at Howard, Kansas. He was sent to Fort Riley in the 140th Infantry Division and served his country for 2 years. He was wounded in France in the Argonne Offensive. He was then returned to the States and given an honorable discharge. He was a member of the America Legion Carter-Rader Post 149, Howard, Kansas. After returning from the service he settled on a farm south of Piedmont, Kansas and was married to Gladys Moore who preceded him in death January 15, 1926. They had 3 children. One son, Cecil of Haysville, Ks. and two daughters, Viola Chinn and Marie Baughman both of Wichita. He is survived by one brother Jesse Richardson of Howard, Kansas and two sisters, Ida Babb of Holly Hill, Florida and Elsie Shumard of Lincoln, Nebraska. His father and mother and twelve brothers and sisters preceded him in death. He leaves his 3 children, 8 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. He was very proud of his family. His grandchildren and great grandchildren were very special to him. He never tired of telling them about all of his fishing experiences and they have found memories of Grandpa playing games and entertaining them. His last years were spent quietly at home in Piedmont. He enjoyed spending his time on the banks of the river observing nature. Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 18, 1978 at Piedmont Methodist Church. OUR GRAND-DAD He was a man that was loved by all those who knew him. Just being with him brought a smile to your face. He was happy with the simple pleasures of life--whether it be a day spent fishing, tending to his garden, watching a bird built its nest, or sitting back for a smoke on his pipe. He was always there with a helping hand and an eagerness to give. His spirit of contentment was an inspiration to all of us. By Jan Chinn, A granddaughter
