Note: Information provided by Edna Reader Gildersleeve on Nov 4, 1999. (1)Daniel Reader was born in Berlin, Germany. His parents had a family of several boys and one girl. The little girl died and is buried in Germany. At the time the family decided to come to America, Germany required all boys in a family when they reached a certain age to serve in the military at the support of their parents. Daniel's father and brother decided that their boys were not going to serve in the German military so they made plans to sail to America. Each family coming to America had to show a certain sum ($1,000) to the government before they were allowed to leave the country. Daniel's father (name unknown) and a brother decided to borrow from each other to get their $1,000. One brother took the $1,000 and showed it to the government and got permission to bring his family to America. Later the other brother took the same $1,000 and showed it to the government and got permission to bring his family to America. (2) Edna thought the spelling of the name in Germany was RHODER or RHOADER. When they Americanized the name to Reader, the two brothers were being processed in different lines and one brother's name was changed to READER, and the other brother's name was changed to REEDER. So, even though they were brothers, their names were spelled differently. She did not know where they settled at first, but knew Daniel settled in Peoria, Ill. (3) Daniel and Comfort Reader are buried at Parks Chapel Cemetery in Henry County, near Coal, MO. She said that Daniel's grave went unmarked for years. About 1968 A. Ralph Boxell decided to mark his grave and found a stone that had been made for someone else, but there was an error and it was not used. The stone's owner said that since it was a flat stone, it could be turned over and Daniel's information put on the other side. Mr. Boxell had this done and he and Ralph (Edna's brother) went to the cemetery and cemented the stone in place. Information provided by George H.D. Reader: (1) He believes the German spelling for the name was ROEDER. (2) While the Reader families were on their way to America, a severe storm arose and the captain of the ship ordered everyone to go below deck, but George Daniel, a fourteen year old boy decided he was going to stay on deck and watch the storm so he found a place to hide. He recalled later, that it was all he could do to desperately hang on to parts of the ship to avoid being washed overboard. (3) George Daniel Reader had been a widower for nineteen years, so his son, John Charles Reader and his fiancee, Emma Louisa Scheer, who planned to be married on February 8, 1905, invited him to live with them after the wedding. Right after the wedding, he decided to visit three of his daughters before moving in with John and Louisa. He first went to Fort Scott, Kansas to visit one daughter (Josephine) and then to Severy, Kansas to visit the other two daughters (Lizzie & Elnora). While in Severy he died, on February 20, 1905. He had no savings, so John and Louisa scrapped together all of the money they had and paid for his funeral and burial. Marriage record found: Daniel Reeder and Comfort Baylor were married on April 10, 1849 in Tazewell County, Illinois.
