Note: OBITUARY -- Elk County Citizen-Advance News, Wednesday Feb. 23, 1994 Phyllis N. Friend Barber, 57, of Wichita, passed away February 4, 1994, at her home, following a lengthy illness. Phyllis was born September 11, 1936, in Elk County, to Jesse Vern and Florence Louise (Armstrong) Friend. She attended Howard High School and graduated with the Class of 1954. She was employed by Learjet Corporation as a sheet metal mechanic. She married W. D. Barber on December 30, 1955, in Wichita and he survives at the home. Others surviving are three sons, William David, Jimmie Dean, both of Wichita; Michael Lewis of Lewisville, TX; two daughters, Judy Lynn Glover of Towanda; Janet Lee White of Wichita; father, Vern Friend of Howard; three brothers, Melvin Friend of Elk Falls; Harold Friend of Wichita; Arthur Friend of Kansas City, MO; one sister, Louise Havens of Winfield; fourteen grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother, Florence on November 29, 1979. Graveside services were conducted February 7 at 2 p.m. in El Paso Cemetery, Derby. Rev. Ray Emery of Midway Baptist Church in Wichita officiated. casket bearers were Gary Welty, Gale Graber, Randy Barber, Ronald Barber, David Wayne Barber and Bryan Lynn Souter. A memorial has been established with Hospice, Inc., P. O. Box 3267, Wichita, KS 67201-3267. Smith Mortuary, Haysville, had charge of the arrangements.
