Note: Homer J. Armstrong was born on a farm near Independence, Missouri. His family moved to Sulphur Springs, Arkansas in 1892 and then to Elk County, Kansas in 1893 where he spent the rest of his life. He was a farmer and stockman. He was a member of the Sunflower and Pomona granges. Homer and Rosie first lived north of Howard near the Pleasant Valley "Cracker Box" School; then they moved to the Hebb place north of Fairview School; then to the Frank Simons place (at the S curve) on the highway north of Howard; then to the Clum place north of Lower Paw Paw School. After Rosie died Homer bought a farm across the road east of the Wiley Friend property. Mr. and Mrs. Cleland Wells had invited them to eat supper at their house at 7:30 p.m., and said not to come sooner because they wouldn't have their chores done. Just as the Armstrongs were putting on their coats, preparatory to leaving, Mr. and Mrs. Frank McLin drove into the yard and innocently inquired if they were going any place. Almost immediately Mr. and Mrs. George Ellis and Mrs. Fannie Dunbar drove in, followed by Mr. and Mrs. Cleland Wells and Gary, Mrs. Vern Friend, Louise, Phyllis, Harold and Arthur, Mr. and Mrs. George Wells and Bill, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Gors, Harold Hufford, Mr. and Mrs. Will Haggard, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hays, Mr. and Mrs. Len Heck and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hawley. After a very bountiful covered dish supper, the evening was spent visiting and playing cards. Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong received many lovely and useful gifts. At a late hour, all departed wishing them many happy returns of the occasion. OBITUARY Homer J. Armstrong Services on Wednesday Homer J. Armstrong, retired farmer and stockman of Howard, died at 8:40 a.m. Sunday in Newton Memorial Hospital. He had been in failing health for several years and was admitted to the hospital Thursday. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Moon chapel in Howard with Rev. Dean Brown officiating. Burial will be in Cresco cemetery north of Howard. Mr. Armstrong was born Oct. 31, 1886 on a farm near Independence, MO., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas S. Armstrong. He came to Kansas when a year old and had spent the rest of his life in Elk County. He was married to Rozella Pool, who died about 15 years ago. On March 4, 1947 he was married to Louisa Nigh at Eureka. They lived on the home farm until moving to Howard in January. He was a member of the Sunflower and Pomona granges. Survivors include his wife: 2 sons, Howard J. of Elk Falls and Ralph of Derby; 2 daughters, Mrs. Gladys Woods of Longton and Mrs. Florence Friend of Howard; 2 step-daughters, Mrs. Cleland Wells of Howard and Mrs. Robert W. Hurt of North Kingston, R.I.; a sister, Mrs. Ruth Dunlap of Pico Rivera, Calif.; 22 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
