Notes
a. Note:   JAMES WAS ACTUALLY BORN IN VIRGINIA BEFORE THERE WAS A WEST VIRGINA, BUT HE WAS BORN IN THE PART THAT WAS TO BECOME WEST VIRGINA. When James was very young the family moved from West Virginia to Iowa and settled near Des Moines. It is believed his mother died while they were living in Iowa. Jim left home when he was young and made his living. It was easy for him to find employment. He was willing to work and there was lots of work to be done on pioneer farms. Child labor laws had not been enacted. Wages were almost nothing except board, bed and clothes. The farmer's wife did his laundry and when he was ill, she cared for him. He was forever grateful to the farmer's wife who nursed him when he had smallpox and was so very ill for several weeks. Jim and Sarah lived near Howard, KS until April 22, 1889 when they made the race into Oklahoma. They were successful and secured land near Loyal Oklahoma in Kingfisher County. in 1901 they sold their land and purchased land in Ellis County near Gage, OK. They built a large two story house with nine rooms and lived on the farm until 1919 when they bought a smaller house in Gage. After his death she continued to live in the house in Gage. Jim was ill for sometime and it was believed his death was due to internal cancer. He left a large estate which wasn't settled until after Sarah's death. Most of his holdings were in real estate which went down in value in the 1930's. Several of the children died before the estate was settled and there wasn't much left to be divided between the living children and the heirs of the others. JAMES WILLIAM BARNES was born December 01, 1852 in Shinnston, Harrison, Virgina, and died May 01, 1922 in Gage, Oklahoma. He married SARAH MARTHA ROYSE July 18, 1880 in Howard, Elk, Kansas.
