They lived there until 1883 then moved to Tub Springs in Umatilla County - then on to Hardman in Gilliam County in 1884. Lived there until September 1893 when they moved to Dayton for the rest of their lives." Letter to Mary Flanders from Helen Gladys Lambert Tolbott on November 24, 1977 "Royse came to California by rail then took a boat up the Pacific, suppose just to Portland, not sure about how far. They had at least two children maybe three. They came to Walla Walla to his Uncle Bill Royse's. Believe they stayed there the first winter. From there they moved to Weston, Oregon. Grandad bought a farm 6 miles from the town. They had such bad luck with their family. They buried a girl Etta, 12 years old, and twin boys, 1 yr old. Grandad bought the second cemetery lot in Weston. Etta had scarlet fever. The boys had measles and something else. While they were gone to bury the first twin the other one died. They were James and John. This was more trouble than he could take so they moved. From Weston they moved to a place with a post office called 'Gooseberry' about a half way station between Heppner and Condon. My mother was born there in 1885. One boy was born before her there but he died so maybe the move wasn't so good after all. From that ranch they moved to Dayton in 1893. Mother was 8 and Minnie 14. Minnie and I believe Arthur was born on the Weston Mt., as well as the twins. Your grandparents (Evan & Sarah Jackson Wallace) must have come to the Condon area sometime in the 1880's. I have listened to a good many wild horse back races and other things kids should not have done when Minnie and your mother and Anna got together. (James) was a war buddy of one of the Jackson boys. The two children they had in the east were Charley and Dora." His pension records show he was 6 feet 1 inch with a dark compexion, grey eyes and dark hair. His occupation was a farmer. After the service he lived in Missouri until 1865, Iowa until 1870, Oregon until 1893 and Washington until his death. James applied for homestead land in LaGrande Oregon, January 1872. NW quarter of Section #28 in Township 4N Range 36E containing 160 acres. Proof required notes James has wife and 3 children and that he had made settlement 1/24/1872. Cultivated 20 acres and made improvements - dwelling and other out buidlings and planted an orchard of 50 fruit trees. All worth $500. J.S. Vancliave states as of 12/29/1874 that he has known James for over 3 years. Calvin Ferguson as of 12/31/1874 has known James for over 4 years and has a dwelling and buildings worth $600.
