The last one recorded in the Minier News, Friday, June 27, 1902 reads: "Michael Friend came up from Montgomery County Monday. He's as spry as ever and says he will stay awhile with friends, so long as he gets good grub." The Montgomery News, Friday, Nov. 2, 1906 Michael Friend, one of the old residents of this county, died at his home one half mile west of Irving on Wednesday, October 31, aged 90 years. The deceased left a family of grown children. He settled in this county a number of years ago, having purchased the old Jacob Lyerla farm. The funeral services were held at the residence Thursday after which the remains were shipped to Bloomington, Ill., his old home, for burial. The Mattoon Comercial, Mattoon, Illinois, Thursday, November 8, 1906 DEATH COMES TO PIONEER Irving.---Michael Friend, a pioneer resident of this county, died at his residence near this village, aged 90 years. The Hillsboro Journal, Friday, Nov. 9, 1906 Michael Friend died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Heber Shreve, near Irving at 11 o'clock Wednesday, October 31, aged 90 years. He came from Minier about three years ago and lived with his daughter ever since. The remains were taken to Minier for burial on Thursday. OBITUARY--MICHAEL FRIEND The remains of Michael Friend, who died last Wednesday night, arrived Friday evening from Irving, Illinois, where he had been living with his daughter, Mrs. Heber Shreve. The funeral was held at the Methodist Church Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Walter E. Rose and the burial was at the Little Mackinaw (Gaines) cemetery beside his wife. The pallbearers were SAC Freitag, H. L. Ogden, Wm Bennet, H. P. Graff, Wm. Colville, and S. C. Preston. The deceased was born July 20, 1816, near Lancaster, Ohio. He came of a family of twelve brothers, the only survivor, Mrs. Lavonia Peek of Mason City, being present at the funeral. He came to Illinois when he was 20 or a little younger and was in Bureau county for a while and then went back to Ohio. There is a difference of opinion as to the date when he came to this county to live permanently, but it must have been somewhere near sixty years ago. He lived in this vicinity until 9 years ago, when he went to Montgomery county to live with this children. He was married in Ohio to Susan Wilson. He was the father of eighteen, of whom seven are living: Thomas, in Kansas; Minerva Friend and Mrs. Lizzie Shreve, of Irving, Illinois; James of Hadar, Nebraska; John, Henry, and Frank, of Minier, all of whom were present at the funeral except James. Mr. Friend was of a genial disposition, and held the life-long friendship and respect of his neighbors and fellow citizens. He was a Methodist and especially in his later years showed a firm reliance in religion. In his death we lose one of our oldest and most respected citizens.
