L., daughter, f/w, 15, MO IL MO, single John Charles Reader was born in Peoria, Illinois where his father owned a general store. One evening his father George Daniel Reader needed to go to the basement to get something, so he took a kerosene lamp as a light. While in the basement something happened that caused him to drop the lamp. Fire quickly spread to the upper structure and the building burned to the ground. He then decided to move his family to Missouri. John Charles was five years old when the family moved and while crossing the Mississippi River his hat blew off of his head into the river. After that, every time he crossed the Mississippi River he would say, "I wonder if I could find my hat?" After growing to manhood, John Charles lived near Coal, Missouri, where he farmed and also worked as a cooper and learned the blacksmith trade. He later worked as a blacksmith at Hartwell and Piper, Missouri. He traveled to Pueblo, Colorado and worked as a blacksmith for a large company, but when they told him he would have to work on Sunday, he told them that he would quit before he would work on the Sabbath Day. They tried hard to persuade him to stay but they would not relent on the Sunday work, so he returned to Mt. Zion, Missouri. Here he met Emma Louisa Scheer whom he married on February 8, 1905. They moved to Sprague, Missouri, a small community close to the Kansas state line, where he built a new blacksmith shop. While living in Sprague three children were born, George Henry Daniel on September 13, 1906, Ralph Otis John on January 22, 1909 and Ruth Mary Comfort on February 3, 1911. In the summer of 1911 John Charles bought a 50 acre farm a mile south of Deepwater, Missouri, and moved from Sprague. When they arrived at the farm with their belongings, a Mrs. Kayler and her son were still living in the house, so her furniture was moved into the front two rooms, and the Readers lived in the three back rooms until Mrs. Kayler and her son moved out. John Charles built a new blacksmith shop in Deepwater, where he worked until the day of his death. They lived on the farm for about three years before moving into Deepwater, where their fourth child, Edna Caroline Louisa was born on march 19, 1915. John Charles was a highly respected business man by all who knew him. He lived a righteous life and served as a Judge in Deepwater for a while. He supported his church with his money and financed a campmeeting, where his children became Christians as well as others of the community. He was a charter member of the Deepwater Church Of The Nazarene. When he passed away on August 24, 1943, the entire town was shocked, and on the day of his funeral all the businesses in town closed in his honor. He is buried in Englewood Cemetery, Clinton, Missouri. Written by: John William Reader, Grandson of John Charles Reader Verified by: George Henry Daniel Reader, father of John William and son of John Charles Reader OBITUARY John Charles Reader, son of George Daniel and Comfort Bailor Reader, was born in Peoria, Illinois on October 2, 1865, and departed this life August 24, 1943, at his home in Deepwater, Missouri, at the age of 77 years 10 months and 22 days. At the age of five he moved with his family to Clinton, Missouri. Within a few months they moved to a farm in the vicinity of Coal, Missouri, where he grew to manhood. While living in his vicinity he farmed for a time, worked at the cooper trade and learned the blacksmith trade which he followed to the last day of his life. He followed this trade at Coal, Hartwell, Piper, Sprague, Pueblo, Colorado, Mt. Zion and Deepwater. It was while he blacksmithed at Mt. Zion that he met Louisa Scheer whom he married February 8, 1905. They established their new home in Sprague, Missouri, where they resided until 1911. Then they moved to the Deepwater vicinity where they have lived for the past thirty two years. To this union four children were born: George of Freeport, Illinois; Ralph of Wichita, Kansas; Ruth and Edna of Deepwater, all of whom survive. He was converted in his early twenties, sanctified wholly several years later, and remained stedfast in the faith until the end. He earnestly sought to live a righteous life and to do the will of God. He was active in the church and religious work, supported it liberally with his money and labors, and sought to promote the spiritual welfare of both individuals and of the community. He was a charter member of the Deepwater Church Of The Nazarene. He is survived by his wife, four children, four grandchildren, two daughters-in-law, one son-in-law, two sisters, Mrs. Elnora Foster of Chetopa, Kansas, and Mrs. Emma Ballard of Auburn, Washington, a number of nephews and nieces, and a multitude of friends. A precious one from us has gone, A voice we loved is still, A place is vacant in our hearts That only Christ can fill.
