Notes
a. Note:   The Howard Democrat, Wednesday February 2, 1888 James M. Poole and Miss Ida J. Akers, both of Paw Paw township, were to have been married on Monday evening, last. The guests were present, the bride in waiting, but the bridegroom did not put in an appearance, and yesterday it was learned that Poole had taken the train for Washington Territory. He gave no reason for his actions not even to his brothers, who pressed him for an explanation of his conduct. Miss Akers is one of the nicest young ladies in Elk county, and is worthy the love and respect of any young man who could be fortunate enough to win her. Before leaving, Poole deeded one-third of his property to his mother, made a will leaving her the rest at his death and a so executed a power of attorney to E. M. Akers, a brother of his affianced, giving him power to dispose of all his property. Altogether the case is a queer one and strongly leads to the conclusion that Mr. Poole must have been suffering under a temporary aberration of mind. 1900 Census, Precinct #1, Beaver Valley, Kit Carson County, Colorado enumerated June 18, 1900 Dwelling #136, Family #137 POOLE, James M., head, w/m, May 1859, 41, IA OH IL, farmer ______, Ida J., wife, w/f, Mar 1866, 34, IN PA PA, married 11 years, mother of 4, 3 living ______, Erford, son, w/m, Mar 1890, 10, KS IA IN ______, Claude, son, w/m, Oct 1892, 7, KS IA IN ______, Hazel, daughter, w/f, Sept 1897, 2, KS IA IN 1910 Census Precinct #1, Beaver Valley, Kit Carson County, Colorado enumerated April 15, 1910 Dwelling #4, Family #4 POOLE, J. Certificate: 9 Ashland Oregon, Monday, January 10, 1927 ILL HEALTH CAUSES LOCAL MAN TO KILL SELF SUNDAY---James M. Poole Commits Suicide at His Home Here---Was Cancer Victim---Leaves Farewell Note to Family Saying he is Sorry. Despondent because of ill health, James M. Poole, aged 67, shot and killed himself shortly after 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the family home, 126 Van Ness Avenue. The body was removed to the Stock undertaking parlors. No inquest will be held. With his wife and two sons, Mr. Poole came here about two years ago from Colorado Springs, Colo., for a visit with relatives. He was so taken up with the climate of this section that he decided to remain here permanently in the hopes of bettering his health. He returned to Colorado where he sold his farm and returned here to reside. The unfortunate man had been a sufferer from cancer for several years and it was despondency over his inability to fight off his disease which led him to take his own life. Yesterday morning he asked members of his family for a sheet of writing paper, saying he wanted to write a letter to some friend. He then took his small-calibre revolver and shot himself in the head. Beside his body the police found this farewell note: To Everybody: I killed myself and am sorry, but there seemed no other way out. J. M. Poole" The deceased is survived by his widow, Mrs. Ida Poole, and by two sons, Claude and Erford, all of this city.
