Note: Message posted on Ashtabula County, Ohio site by Carol Tilson on February 20, 2000. Am trying to find out what happened to the family of Elijah POOL and his wife, Lucy NILES, sister of my 4great-grandfather David NILES. Elijah and Lucy were both born in Vermont and married 19 Jan 1809 in Geauga Co, OH. They spent the first decade or so of their marriage in Ashtabula County then disappeared (at least from me). Both were deceased by 1854, according to probate records of another NILES brother. His will, however, listed five living POOL children (but no residences): Calvin, Alonzo (or Alanson), Abigail, David and Lorana. Can anyone out there in the POOL community claim these people? Sure would like to hear from you. Carol Tilson My Reply to Carol on April 14, 2000 I just discovered your post about Elijah Pool. You list five living Pool children, Calvin, Alonzo, Abigail, David and Lorana. I am searching for information on my great-great Grandfather, David Pool/Poole who was born in Ashtabula County, OH on May 16, 1821. His parents and siblings names are unknown to me. Could my David be the same David you list as a son of Elijah?? Rufus Clark, republished in book format by the Ashtabula County Genealogical Society [1980] from a series of articles in the "Conneaut Reporter" [1880]. "In these parts settlers began early to pitch their domiciles. Elijah Pool, a young man who came into the country with David Niles, 1802, and married one of his daughters, raised his shanty about one hundred rods east of where Walker Bennett now lives. It was in the ravine where he set out an orchard. Pardon Spooner raised his cabin on the present site of Mr. Bennett's house, and set out an orchard north of it." [p. 11]. "Elijah Pool who came into the country with David Niles, in 1802, and who married one of Mr. Niles' daughters, became quite careless or lawless respecting the Bible rules or divine things. He often indulged in hunting on the Sabbath, and in vain sports. But after his conversion and union with the church in 1825, he became a most devout Christian. He was ready to acknowledge his profession on every occasion, and his example was above suspicion." In 1837, Elisha (sic) and Lucy Pool sold 26+ acres in Monroe to Alanson Pool. That same year Alanson Pool sold 59+ acres in Monroe. I need to dig deeper to find specific dates, but the entries indicate the Pools didn't move west with Lucy's brothers Sanford, David and Thomas Jefferson Niles in 1835-36. She and Elijah seem to have remained in Ashtabula County at least another year, relocating to Dubuque Co., IA, in time to be on the 1840 census. (This information from Carol Tilson.)
